A structured cabling structure is a comprehensive system of cabling, its associated hardware that provides a complete telecommunications infrastructure. This infrastructure assists a wide range of applications like providing telephone service or transmitting data through a computer network.

A structured cabling system classifies premise wiring into seven basic components. 

  1. Work Area

The work area includes all components between the faceplate and Ethernet-based device. This includes the patch cable between the Ethernet device and faceplate. Every work area is followed by a telecommunications closet or wiring closet on the same floor.
