Top 7 Components of a Structured Cabling System
A structured cabling structure is a comprehensive system of cabling, its associated hardware that provides a complete telecommunications infrastructure. This infrastructure assists a wide range of applications like providing telephone service or transmitting data through a computer network.
A structured cabling system classifies premise wiring into seven basic components.
- Work Area
The work area includes all components between the faceplate and Ethernet-based device. This includes the patch cable between the Ethernet device and faceplate. Every work area is followed by a telecommunications closet or wiring closet on the same floor.
- Horizontal Cabling
It consists of the cabling between the work area and the telecommunications closet. This involves the faceplates in the work area, the cable runs to the faceplates or patch panel in the wiring closet.
Horizontal cabling uses UTP or STP cables & connection hardware. To terminate horizontal cables, a 110 connect system is used at the wall plate, and a patch panel is suggested.
Usually, for horizontal cable run & independent of the cable type, the maximum distance is 90 meters and 90 meters enables an additional 10 meters for patch cables in the work area and wiring closet.
- Computer Room or Telecommunications Closet
All buildings should have at least one telecommunications or wiring closet that comprises the hardware needed to attach the horizontal cable runs from each work area to the patch panels and hubs. Patch panels are essential parts of any structured cable system. Moves and changes are implemented by running a modular patch cord on the patch panel. Other devices on the network remain stable by a change to an individual connection at the patch panel.
Utilize best cable routing and dressing fixtures in the wiring closet to decrease the stress happened by tension and to efficiently organize cables.
- Backbone Cabling
Backbone cabling, a structured cabling component that establishes interconnections between multiple wiring closets. In a small system that is generally served by an 8, 12, or 16 port switch/router, a backbone cable is required only when the POS LAN becomes an element of an existing on-site network or needs internet access.
Fiber is the prescribed solution when distances between wiring closets are more than 100 meters.
- Network Administration
Network Administration is as essential as any other component of a structured cabling system. Network Administration includes system documentation, security, and backing up user data.
- System Documentation
The document even the smallest systems to allow for additions, troubleshooting, and equipment moves. Documentation is a process to create a physical plan of the system that outlines the location of every device and the wiring between each.
By implementing password protection schemes on every workstation to avoid unauthorized use of the application software and to avoid unauthorized access to critical data files.
Execute a procedure where unusual user passwords are created and stored in a secure, central location. Utilize procedures to change passwords periodically and remove the passwords for users who don’t have access to the network.
Roofs leak, pipes burst, hard disks fail, lightning strikes are some of the problems that every business suffers. These things can cause loss or corrupt the data and application files. Backing up system data and totals on regular basis and storing them safely and at a secure place is a significant part of Network Administration, and enhances the recovery process during the sudden event.
Formulate a procedure that determines when server backups happen, how often they are conducted, and how often backup tapes are stored and rotated. Stored backup tapes on-site are unusable if the building burns down or gets flooded. Having a second set of backup tapes protects and offsite is a valuable precaution.
All seven of these subsystems work collectively to develop one power-packed system for your business’s network. Without any one of these subsystems, this cabling network is not going to work. This system at the proper place assures that the cabling infrastructure is maintaining your network, provides extensive coverage and connectivity for all your employees.
Evaluate and execute the power of organized cabling to run your business operations smoothly.
