Building Automation System
Building Management System or a Building Control System is a system that contains various electric, electronic and mechanical systems throughout an establishment.
Building automation systems are primarily used to manage the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in an establishment, and are also used to manage lighting, security, and other construction systems.
Business Automation System operates as a computer networking system that monitors and controls other electronic and mechanical or automatic systems. It provides systems to communicate across platforms, software, and languages.
The Building Automation System (BAS) core functionality is to keep building climate within a specified range, light spaces based on an occupancy schedule, monitor performance and device failures in all plans, and provide malfunction warnings.
Automation systems decrease building energy and maintenance costs compared to non-controlled buildings.
Some of the Benefits of Building Automation System
- BAS can control many systems like fire safety, flood safety ventilation, and security system at one time, which reduces the opportunity for human mistakes.
- BAS (Building Automation System) can monitor the performance of various systems.
- A building automation system can supply fail-safe mechanisms when electronic or mechanical failures occur and it is important in dangerous, high-risk work atmospheres.
- An energy management system can decrease energy consumption and decrease the operating expenditures of the various systems.
- It can improve the efficiency of the building’s other attached systems.
- It can expand the life of various utilities.
- BAS can provide comfort for occupants.
Components of Building Automation System
Building automation systems usually have 5 components. We will explain how these components interact and convey with each other.
1. Sensors
Sensors Devices keep track of the humidity, temperature, lighting levels, how many individuals are in the room, if there is smoke in the rooms, and additional parameters. After collecting this information, sensors devices transmit them to the controllers.
2. Controllers
Controllers Devices are the brain of the building’s Automation System. They gather all of the information from the sensors and with that information, transmit commands to all connected systems, like HVAC systems, lighting systems, and more.
3. Output devices
When the controller sends out a command, relays and actuators of the specific systems observe the new instructions or needs. For example, turn on the heat or air conditioning at 8 am so when people come to perform at 8 am, it’s heated or air-conditioned.
4. Communication protocols
Every building automation system utilizes specific language to attach each individual component. Protocols such as BACnet and Modus allow each component to send and obtain information in order to adjust its settings and manage commands.
5. Terminal interface
Every BAS has a user interface from which building and facility operators can access it. This terminal supports users to understand the details transferred between each component and provides the opportunity for making adjustments manually.
The displays are visible with photo-realistic graphics. These graphics usually conduct each floor plan with each piece of equipment.
